Workshop Series: The Art of Sustainable Living
Join us for an informative and empowering series of workshops to discuss and analyze sustainable living, and apply concepts to one’s own lifestyle.
Instructor: Richard T. Reep, LEED-AP
Workshops are offered as individual classes for $25, or enjoy the entire series for $125. Students will be provided valuable, practical information to integrate into their daily lives. Must pre-register as course is limited to 15 students.
Workshop 6: Intentional Communities and Co-Housing
Students will complete the workshop with new ways to view their own neighborhood and community, and how to view shared space and shared resources, as well as shared production capabilities. This workshop is an advanced course that explores two concepts: co-housing and intentional communities. No prior knowledge is required, although attendance at a previous workshop to become familiar with concepts and terms is helpful.
Goals/Learning Objectives:
Overview of the intentional community movement and the co-housing movement from Europe to America
Understanding of shared community values in power and water generation/consumption
Understanding of shared community values in food production
Understanding of the qualities of the built environment in an intentional community
Workshop: The class will create a hypothetical intentional community and explore the opportunities and constraints in such an action.
Selecting land for a community (existing neighborhood vs. Greenfield development)
Choosing dwelling space; single-family detached vs. multifamily
Goalsetting regarding consumption vs. production of energy/water/resources
Goalsetting regarding community space – commons, commonhouse
Goalsetting in creating community and social values
Students taking these workshops will gain an understanding of sustainability related to landscape, architecture, and interior design, both for their own residences and for their community.
Each workshop explores a different question, and the workshops can be taken individually or as an entire class series.
